TV Addict Versus Book Worm

Valeria Duca - Still life with garlicMy boyfriend and I have been together for more than ten years but it’s a running joke amongst our friends that we have nothing in common. On the face of it, there are more differences than similarities, it’s true. I am an avid reader and regularly devour seval novels in the course of one week. Our bedroom is lined with bookcases but nearly all the books are mine. My boyfriend reads when we go on beach holidays but his main reading material consists of biographies of footballers. He prefers to relax at home by watching TV and although I will hapily cuddle up next to him with my book, I pay no attention to whatever series he is working his way through. While my furniture is the bookcases, the only thing he browses to find the perfect one are TV cabinets. I’m serious. We must have changed the piece of furniture where our TV lives about once a year. The TV also gets upgraded far more often in our house than in the homes of other people I know! I occasionally get him to watch a film with me but he will never watch something with subtitles so any foreign language films are for nights in on my own. Luckily we both enjoy skiing so our main source of Winter relaxation is something we can do together. On ski trips we both leave our home comforts at home. He leaves the TV switched off in our hotel and I don’t bring a novel. It means we spend quality time talking to each other, catching up and enjoying each other’s company. We have a trip booked for two weeks’ time so I’d better finish off my book this week in good time for switch off and snowy relax in the Alps.

Pat and I make our living as freelance writers. We love that job because we can work from home on our computers, and our blindness does not cause us not to get the jobs. Pat and I are blind, and we have faced a whole lot of discrimination when applying for work. Even though we had the skills to do the job well, employers looked down on us ad did not hire us. Working online was different. People could not judge us on the other side of the Internet. They judged us like everyone else. They based their decisions on our ability to promote ourselves, as well as on the skills that we have.

We got one assignment that was interesting to us. We had to write several articles using the keyword, “toddler bed.” This was a pretty easy assignment for us because we both have young children, and it was not too long ago that we bought them each a toddler bed. I Need a Bed!

I am in desperate need of a new double bed. The old mattress I have now is driving me crazy. The springs are practically coming through the fabric, and it is killing my hips. I am starting to dread going to bed, because I don’t want to spend 8 hours a night tossing and turning on a lumpy, old mattress. As of late, I seem to be spending more and more nights sleeping on my nice, soft, comfy sofa in the living room. I am not a big fan of sleeping on the sofa, though, because I enjoy my privacy when I sleep. Not to mention, my room mate is up at the crack of dawn — even on the weekends. That does not go over well when I am sound asleep on the sofa. So, I definitely have to get myself a new bed. I will just have to find room for it in the budget.
