I got the chance to test it against my Nokia N79. Regarding the quality of reception for the Samsung Galaxy S II, it could have been a lot better (especially for a new phone). Its screen size is 4.3″, which is pretty reasonable. One thing that surprised me was the sensitivity of the network. With my N79, I have 100% reception at my home but with the SG2, I have only 50% or 25%. When traveling (locally), I noticed low sensitivity yet again and sometimes I had no reception whatsoever whereas, with the Nokia N79, I had no problems as such. Even with Wi-Fi, the connection was very poor when I was on my terrace. I tested my N79 which brilliantly succeeded in both aspects. Lastly, one advantage which I appreciated was that you do not have to rely on the internal storage of the phone as it accepts sd cards.

Multi-channel audio has become mainstream and manufacturers have come up with many types of basic and more advanced technologies like wireless surround sound speakers, virtual surround sound to simplify the installation of home theater systems. Part manufacturers have designed a number of technologies to simplify the installation.

One option is reducing the number of loudspeakers by creating virtual loudspeakers. This method applies signal processing to the audio and adds phase shifts and cues to the sound that would usually be broadcast by the remote loudspeaker. As the signal processing is based on how the human hearing detects the origin of audio, the audio components which underwent signal processing can be mixed with the front speaker components and sent by the front loudspeakers. The signal processing has an effect that will trick the listener into presuming that the sound is originating from a different position.

Virtual surround eliminates the remote loudspeakers and simplifies the setup and also eliminates long speaker wire runs. Then again, it also has a drawback. The form of each human’s ear is a little dissimilar. For that reason everybody processes sound differently. The signal processing of these virtual surround systems is based on a standard model which was calculated with a standard ear. However, virtual surround will not work equally well for each human.

Wireless surround sound products are an additional option for simplifying home speaker installations and usually come with a transmitter module that connects to the source and also wireless amplifiers which will connect to the remote speakers. Most wireless devices operate in the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands. Some products use the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band and therefore have less competition from other wireless gadgets.
